Christ Is King
“Christ is king” was a trending topic on social media over the last couple of weeks. But it wasn’t for the right reasons. It appears that many are using the phrase as a way of making fun of Jewish people. Part of this started with the conservative media group Daily Wire. Candace Owens was recently fired from Daily Wire and she came out saying that you have to be pro-Jewish or else over there. Many have accused her of being anti-semitic. She said, “A group of nasty people tried to spearhead a PR campaign behind the scenes to smear me as antisemitic when it was announced that I parted ways with the Daily Wire…”
There have been many instances where she seemed to agree with things that were against the Jewish nation over the last couple of years. But one of the focal points of her firing is a comment she made back in October of 2023. She and Ben Shapiro were having a public fight on X (formerly Twitter) and Candice in one of her responses just simply said “Christ is King”. Many took this as a dig against Shapiro, who is Jewish.
Owen stated this week, “The reason why some people believe that with enough insistence they can convince American Christians that the basic truth, ‘Christ is King’ is actually antisemitic, is because they have been successfully spiking the ball on Christianity for the past 60 years.” This then led many others to talk about the phrase and what it means. Andrew Klavan, a podcast host at The Daily Wire and a Christian, said the phrase is being used as anti-sematic. Then another Daily Wire employee chimed in. Christian Post reported that, “Daily Wire CEO Jeremy Boreing appeared to stand with Klavan on his views, adding that he believes saying “Christ is King” could actually be seen as a violation of one of the Ten Commandments” Then on the other side of things,Sneako and Andrew Tate, both social media influencers, tweeted “Christ is King”. Why is this such a big deal? Well, both of these men are Muslim. They don’t really believe that Jesus Christ is Lord over all. Tate also tweeted, “As a Muslim it warms my heart to see the resurgence of spirited Christian declarations.” This said as a slight to Jewish people. And what made this more interesting Candice Owen liked Tate’s tweet.
But it didn't end there. Because of all these conservative commentators commentating on the statement “Jesus is King”, This then led some media outlets to take it to another level. Liberal media and commentators suggested that this phrase was a right wing rallying cry of some sort. Not having anything to do with religion, but conservative politics. Some even went as far to say that this was a push for Christian nationalism.
There has been quite a media firestorm about Jesus leading up to Easter! I would now like to say a few things in regards to Jesus being King. First…HE IS! In First Timothy Paul said, “Which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords…” Jesus Himself said when facing Pilate, “Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” (John 18:37) He is THE King! He was seated on the throne after His ascension. He is the ruler over all. He will judge all the hearts of men when they die. All of His enemies will be beneath Him and conquered. Every knee will bow down and acknowledge and honor His Lordship. So if someone has a problem with this statement, they have an issue with God. They have an issue with the Bible and the truth.
Yet, having said this, the phrase can be used in a sinful tone. It can, and has, been used as a mockery. It started right from the beginning, when Pilate put that phrase on Jesus’ cross. And He didn’t put it on there because he believed it to be true. He was making a mockery of the whole affair. Just as some people have been lately on social media. While Candice Owens may believe Jesus is King, she also used it as a dig against Jews. There is nothing funny about Our Savior being the Lord of all. There is nothing amusing about this precious truth. The fact that many people, including Christians, are not taking this truth more seriously is very concerning and sad.
We all have a king in our life. We all have someone or something we submit to. The Jews blasphemously said to Pilate that Caesar is their king and not Jesus (John 19:15). For many of us it is ourselves. We are the kings and lords of our lives. But this doesn’t change the fact that Jesus is King! Nothing is going to change that fact. The only thing that can change is our submission to His Lordship. We all must make a decision about Him and His claims as King. And everyone needs to decide if they will submit to his Lordship now and be heirs to His throne. Or if they will do it later, when they die and realize their error and are too late.
