There Is No Such Thing As Race
A recent article in National Geographic stated that there is no such thing as race. The title of the article is There Is No Scientific Basis for Race-It’s A Made Up Label. The article goes into detail discussing the many genetical studies that have been done with human DNA and what it tells us about race and our origin. The article states, “Over the past few decades, genetic research has revealed two deep truths about people. The first is that all humans are closely related—more closely related than all chimps, even though there are many more humans around today. Everyone has the same collection of genes, but with the exception of identical twins, everyone has slightly different versions of some of them. Studies of this genetic diversity have allowed scientists to reconstruct a kind of family tree of human populations. That has revealed the second deep truth: In a very real sense, all people alive today are Africans.”
The summarization of the article is that we are all closely related and there is no such thing as race. But this really isn’t news. The Bible has been teaching this for centuries. We are all closely related because we are all descendants from the same two people...Adam and Eve. That is why Eve was named “Eve”. “Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.” (Genesis 3:20) The Bible is clear that God did not make races but just one race, the human race. “And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28) Our differences in appearance is just a display of God’s beautiful and holy creativity. “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.” (Romans 1:20) The article explains how the difference in skin color has to do with the amount of melanin a particular person has. Genetically we are all pretty much the same.
So why are we labeled, categorized and separated by skin color so much in society? Simple...because of sin. Let us not forget that it was sin that brought about the first dividing of the human race with the Tower of Babel (see Genesis 11). Ever since then humans have been dividing what God intended to be united. Our sinful nature has brought about multiple systems, angles, levels and ways of racism. We have done a good job of dividing, marginalizing and tearing ourselves apart due to our pride and selfishness. But praise be to God we do not have the final say. While the sinful world is dividing everyone, He is bringing them together in Christ. We are all one in Christ when we become saved. What unites us in all of our differences is the blood of Christ. We are all adopted into His family because of the work of Christ. In His church (the true church), there is not black and white, poor and rich, Americans and Chinese. There are just Christians.
“For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26-28
